Quality, dimensions, and file format

Image size is controlled by three main factors: pixel dimensions, encoding quality, and format. JPEG and WebP can reduce detail gradually. PNG is lossless, so meaningful reductions often require fewer pixels or a format conversion.

The compressor tests settings locally and keeps the best result it can produce under your target. If quality changes are not enough, aggressive modes may reduce dimensions. The result shows the final format and size before you download it.

Use the smallest change that solves the problem

For email, forms, and profile images, begin with Balanced mode and a moderate target. Use Strong when a hard upload limit matters more than fine detail. Maximum is intended for difficult limits where visible reduction is acceptable.

Keep your original image. Compression is a delivery step, not an archival workflow. 5MB.me downloads a new file and never overwrites the source.

Frequently asked questions

Which image formats are supported?
5MB.me accepts JPEG, PNG, and WebP images. You can optionally convert JPEG or PNG files to WebP when a smaller modern format is acceptable.
Will compression change the image dimensions?
Balanced mode first tries quality changes. More aggressive targets may require reducing width and height because resolution is often the largest remaining size lever.
Should I convert a PNG to WebP?
WebP is often much smaller for photographs and complex graphics. Keep PNG when you require its exact lossless pixels or compatibility with an older workflow.
