Privacy Policy
5MB.me is designed so that supported files are compressed on your device. This policy explains what the service can access, what may be processed when you visit the website, and the choices available to you.
Files you select
Files selected for compression are read and processed locally by your browser. 5MB.me does not intentionally upload the contents, file name, generated output, or compression settings to a 5MB.me server. The output is created as a browser Blob and downloaded directly to your device.
Your browser may keep selected files and generated results in memory while the page remains open. That working data is released when the page is closed, refreshed, reset, or reclaimed by the browser. 5MB.me is not a storage or backup service.
Information collected automatically
When you request a page, ordinary hosting and security infrastructure may process technical data such as your IP address, request time, requested URL, response status, browser user agent, and referring page. This data may be present in short-lived server, network, security, or error logs even though file contents are not uploaded.
5MB.me does not currently use advertising cookies or third-party behavioral analytics. If that practice changes, this policy and any legally required consent controls will be updated before the change applies.
Browser storage and the installed app
The site may store essential preferences on your device, including theme selection and whether you dismissed the PWA installation prompt. The service worker and browser cache store application code, interface assets, fonts, PDF rendering code, and image-compression codecs so the installed app can work offline.
These caches are intended to contain application resources, not the files you choose for compression. You can clear them using your browser's site-data controls or by uninstalling the PWA. Blocking essential storage may prevent preferences, installation prompts, or offline operation from working correctly.
How limited technical data may be used
Technical request and error data may be used to deliver the site, protect it from abuse, investigate failures, maintain security, comply with legal obligations, and understand aggregate service reliability. It is not used to inspect the contents of files processed locally in your browser.
Service providers and disclosure
5MB.me may rely on hosting, content-delivery, domain, security, and error-monitoring providers. Those providers may process limited technical data on our behalf under their own infrastructure and contractual safeguards.
Information may also be preserved or disclosed when reasonably necessary to comply with applicable law, a valid legal request, protect users or the public, investigate abuse, or establish and defend legal claims. 5MB.me does not sell file contents or personal information.
Data retention
5MB.me does not retain selected file contents or generated files on its servers because the compression workflow does not send them there. Hosting and security logs, if created, are retained only as long as reasonably necessary for operations, security, legal compliance, and dispute resolution, subject to the practices of the relevant infrastructure provider.
International processing
Infrastructure providers may process limited technical data in countries other than your own. Where required, appropriate contractual or legal safeguards should be used for international transfers. Your locally processed file remains on your device unless your own browser, extensions, operating system, synchronization software, or later actions transmit it elsewhere.
Your rights and choices
Depending on your location, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, portability, or information about the processing of personal data. You may also complain to the data-protection authority responsible for your area.
Because 5MB.me has no user accounts and does not receive your file contents, it may have little or no information that can be linked back to you. Requests may require enough detail to identify the relevant technical record without collecting unnecessary additional data.
Security and your responsibilities
Reasonable technical and organizational measures are used to protect the service, but no website, browser, network, or device can be guaranteed completely secure. Use a trusted device, keep your browser updated, review installed extensions, understand where downloads are saved, and protect sensitive source and output files appropriately.
Children
5MB.me is a general-purpose utility and is not directed specifically to children. It does not knowingly request names, accounts, or contact details from children. A parent or guardian should supervise use where required by applicable law.
Changes and contact
This policy may be updated when the service, providers, or legal requirements change. The updated date will be shown above, and material changes will be communicated when required by law.
Questions, privacy requests, and complaints may be sent to legal [at] 5mb.me. Please do not attach sensitive files to a privacy inquiry.
